RIGGING GUIDE | MATCHING JIG HEAD SIZE TO PLASTICS
Getting your jig head size right matters more than most people think.
It’s not just about length : body thickness, balance, and hook exposure all play a part.
Here’s a simple guide based on what consistently works.
Smaller profiles
- 120mm plastics fish best on 3/0–5/0 jig heads
- Ideal for lighter presentations and finesse situations
Mid-size plastics
- 150mm plastics pair cleanly with a 7/0
- Good balance of weight, hook exposure, and swim action
Large plastics
- 200mm plastics suit a 9/0
- A solid option for barra when stepping up in profile
Oversize plastics
- 220–240mm plastics are best rigged on 10/0
- Designed for thicker bodies and better hook-up rates on bigger fish
Magnum plastics
- 250–300mm plastics need a 12/0
- Built for serious fish, deep water, heavy current, and confident bites
If the plastic is thick through the belly, don’t be afraid to size up.
A jig head that’s too small costs hook exposure and missed fish.
